     Alexander was born in Tullochcrosk, Fortingall, Perthshire, on 29 June 1841.^1,2 He was listed as John STEWART's son in the 1851 census in Tullochcrosk, Fortingall, Perthshire.³ He graduated with an MD from the Glasgow, Lanarkshire, in 1862.⁴ He left Glasgow on 11 October 1862, on board the 'Ben Lomond' for Port Chalmers, arriving 19 Jan 1863.^5,6 He was described as "a fine good-looking clear-complexioned man, well-cut features, light brown hair with fair coloured beard and whiskers" on his arrival in New Zealand in 1863.^7,8 He was employed in 1863 at Tuapeka, Otago.^9,10 To carry his sixteen stone he bought a horse through the agency of James Robertson (his brother-in-law), who broke it in for him. This horse, whose name he changed from 'Dick the Devil' to 'Doctor' became well known as a trotter and once went the distance from Tokomairiro to Dunedin (38 1/2 miles) in under two and a half hours.^11,12 He was registered from 1866 to 1871 on the electoral roll at Otago.¹³ He was registered in 1867 and 1874 on the electoral roll at Otago.¹³
