     Harold (Hughie) John FORSAITH was born on 2 July 1889 at Prospect in Adelaide, South Australia.¹ He enlisted on 23 February 1915 as Cleaner in Company 300, Reinforcement 6, (#6838), being single, a Motor Mechanic, resident at 69 Park St, Hyde Park, Sth Australia and giving his name as 'Hughie John'. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A35 Berrima, 28 Jun 1915 (embarkation number 25/99/3). He was listed on the Nominal Roll as Private, 5th Division HQ and was discharged from this unit at some time in early 1916, although his subsequent discharge from the AIF did not occur until February 1917.^2,3 His service records show he initially served in Egypt but was attached to the Royal Flying Corps school by November 1916 and commissioned into the RFC as 2nd Lieutenant on probation, effective 16th April 1917. His first posting was to the 28th Reserve Squadron in Gosport, a training squadron, although it was re-equipped with Sopwith Camels and moved to France.³
