John Fergusson

(c 1791 - 1866)
Father*Thomas Fergusson1 b. c 1758, d. 1844
Mother*Christian Douglass b. c 1759, d. 1849
John Fergusson was born in Lagrach, Pitlochry, Perthshire, circa 1791.2,3,4

As stated by his sons John and Alexander in their submission to the Records of the Clan Fergusson (1895), "He was taken from his parents (Thomas Fergusson and Christina Douglas) when a child by General Fergusson of Dunfallandy, and educated there at his expense, he being considered the nearest male heir to the head of the clan. Why he never became so we cannot say. He left Dunfallandy shortly after leaving school, and learned the building trade under his father."1

He married Christy McGregor, daughter of Alexander McGregor and Margaret McFarlane, in Innerhadden, Rannoch, Perthshire, on 6 December 1820. His son John, in his submission to the Records of the Clan Fergusson (1895) stated that "In the year 1820, when he was building Muir Lodge (his first contract after his apprenticeship), he made the acquaintance of Christina, eldest daughter of Alexander Macgregor, Inverhadden, ruling elder of the Established Church, Kinloch, whom he subsequently married in the end of February or the beginning of March 1821" (although this date is clearly suspect).5,4,6

He was listed in the 1841 census at Balmore in Logierait, Perthshire, with his wife Christy; he was a mason. Their children Christian, Ewen, Janet and Mary were listed with them.7

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at Balmore in Logierait, Perthshire, with his wife Christy; he was a mason. Their children Jane, Janet, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth and Catherine were listed as living with them.8

He signed the register at John Fergusson and Jessie Muirhead McFarlane's wedding in Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire, on 27 June 1859.9,10

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at Balmore in Rannoch, Perthshire; he was a mason. His children Ann, Jane and Christian were listed as living with him, also his grand-sons James Williamson and Alexander Stewart and grand-daughters Jean Williamson and Christian Williamson.11

John died on 15 March 1866 at Balmore in Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire; the informant was his son Alexander.12,1,4 He was buried at the the Churchyard of the 'Established Church' in Kinloch Rannoch.1,4
