Wentworth Single1

(c 1883 - 1955)
Wentworth SINGLE (1883-1955)
Wentworth Single was born in Penrith, New South Wales, circa 1883. He was the son of Charles Walter SINGLE, grazier, and Julia FRASER.2,3

He married Nazeli Evelyn Skinner in Perth, Western Australia, in 1909.4

He may have been working as an itinerant labourer as the Electoral Rolls show him as living in Toodyay in 1910, then later working as a miner in Bullfinch (both in WA).5

He enlisted in the 4th Reinforcements, 16th Battalion, Australian Army (#1860) on 18 January 1915 at Perth, Western Australia.6
He served at Gallipoli from 2 June 1915 but was hospitalised with varicocele, haemorrhoids and gastritis in Oct-Nov and repatriated to England by December 1915. His records show a string of AWOL offences, and despite electing at enlistment that 4/5 of his pay should go direct to his wife Nazeli and their 3 children, there were periods where his pay was stopped entirely as a result of these episodes. By Oct 1916 he had been posted to Etaples, France and despite further charges of drunkenness and absence, was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 15 Jun 1917. In Sep 1917 he was back in hospital with a shoulder injury, and again in May 1918 with a septic toe. However, he was promoted to Sgt as a result of the death of a Sgt McKinnon on 20 Jun 1918. As a result of a sprained ankle playing cricket in Aug 1918 he ended up in Weymouth on leave and must have been in England at the end of the war.6 He was discharged on 29 March 1919 at London, Middlesex, It is unclear how and when he eventually returned to Australia.6

Wentworth's second marriage was to Alison Macgregor Fergusson, daughter of Alexander Macgregor Fergusson and Jessie Amy Baller, on 18 June 1921 at the Registrar's Office in Newtown, New South Wales. His conjugal status was given as 'Divorced respondent', although 'respondent' was then crossed out.2

From 1930 the Electoral Rolls track an unsettled lifestyle, being in Dapto, Moss Vale and Ryde with Wentworth either a labourer or farmer until 1933. However, from 1937 until 1943 Wentworth and Alison were in Hornsby, then later farming in Gosford. By 1949 he was unemployed, and they were living in Gulgong, then moved back to Gosford.5

As of 1933, Wentworth Single was also known as Charles Wentworth Single, using his father's first name in addition to his own.7
He served in WWII from 19 August 1940 until discharged on 28 Jul 1943 with the rank of Lance-Sergeant (#N78491) having been working in administration for the Cadre Convalescent Homes. He appears to have considerably lowered his age for this service, claiming a birthdate of 7 Apr 1890.8

Wentworth died on 19 July 1955 in Gosford, New South Wales.9,10,11 He was buried in July 1955 at the Wamberal Cemetery, The Entrance Rd in Wamberal.12
