During at least one of the Star of the West voyages (1874-75) John, as Captain, was acompanied by his younger brother Frederick who had signed on as Able Seaman.7

He married Maria le Quesne, daughter of Richard le Quesne and Eliza le Couteur, in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1883.2

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 'Bordage' in St Pierre-du-Bois, Guernsey, Channel Islands, with his wife Maria; he was a grape-grower and retired Master Mariner. Their children Estelle, Christine and John were listed as living with them, as were Maria's father Richard le Quesne and her sister Emma S. le Quesne.8

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at 'Bordage' in St Pierre-du-Bois, Guernsey, Channel Islands, with his wife Maria; he was a grower.
