George Paul1

(c 1815 - 1894)
Father*Thomas Paul2 b. 1774, d. 1848
Mother*Ann Williamson2 b. c 1789, d. 1869
George Paul was born in Briston, Norfolk, circa 1815. This year estimate is based on his apparent baptism date and a near match to census data, where his implied birth-date varies to as much as 1822. However his age at death was claimed to be 80, also supporting a birth year of 1814-5.1 He was baptised in Briston, Norfolk, on 24 July 1815.3,2

He married Harriet Dagless, daughter of Charles Dagless and Eliza Strike, in Briston, Norfolk, on 25 December 1834.4

They appeared before the Walsingham, Norfolk, on 13 July 1838, charged with larceny. Thomas was acquitted, but George was sentenced to 18 mths imprisonment.5

He was listed in the 1841 census in Briston, Norfolk, with his wife Harriet; he was an agricultural labourer. Their children James, William and Sarah were listed with them.6

It appears that some time in the period 1846 to 1849, George abandoned his family in Norfolk and moved to the Tynemouth area, probably looking for work.
His presumed son Ralph was born to Mary STOBBS in 1850, but the birth was registered without a father's name being recorded. Subsequently he seems to have lived with Mary as the next seven children were registered under the name of PAUL, with mother's maiden name STOBBS or STUBBS.
He delayed his marriage to Mary until Sep 1873, but even so, Harriet was still alive for some years after this date.

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family in Seghill, Northumberland, with his wife Mary; he was a coal-miner. Note that both their ages wandered significantly from the truth in this and subsequent censuses, but merged towards reality by 1881. Their child Ralph was listed as living with them.7

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family in Houghton le Spring, Durham, with his wife Mary; he was a coal-miner. Their children Ralph, Ann, Georgiana, Thomas and Margaret were listed as living with them.1

He was listed in the 1871 census as Head of Family at 57 Blaketon in Seghill, Northumberland, with his wife Mary; he was a coal-miner. Their children Ann, Margaret, Catherine and George were listed as living with them.8

George's second marriage was to Mary Stobbs, daughter of Ralph Stobbs and Catherine Clark, on 16 September 1872 at the Parish Church, St Andrews in Newcastle-on-Tyne. George claimed an age of 50 (but must have been 58) and was still working as a miner. Mary gave her name as Mary FORD, widow, implying an earlier marriage, but no record has been found - this would have to have occurred around 1846-50, before she started living with George. Strictly speaking, this marriage was bigamous, as George's first wife did not die until 1885, although he claimed to be a widower.9

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at Blake Town in Seghill, Northumberland, with his wife Mary; he was a coal-miner. Their child Catherine was listed as living with them.10

He was widowed on the death of his wife Mary between January 1888 and March 1888.11
He was listed as the father-in-law of Hugh Slater in the 1891 Census at Blake Town in Seghill, Northumberland, and he was a retired coal-miner.12

George died on 21 September 1894 in Seghill, Northumberland; his son-in-law Hugh Slater was the informant.13
