Norman Wicks was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, on 8 January 1923.1

He joined up in 1942 and was initially assigned to HMS Duke (a shore establishment for new entry Stokers), but by April 1943 had joined the Fleet Air Arm and was training at HMS Gosling and HMS Condor (both shore bases), with rank of Naval Airman 2nd class.
In May 1943 he was at HMS Daedalus at Loughborough, where he met his future wife.
On 27 Dec 1943 he was promoted to be a Probationary Temporary Midshipman (Air) in the RNVR for aircraft engineering duties; by May 1944 he was Probationary Acting Sub-Lieutenant (Air Engineering), RNVR and after further training at the HMS Kestrel shore base he was assigned to the escort carrier HMS Chaser from 17 Jan to 7 July 1945, serving as Asst Air Engineer Officer.
During this period Chaser transported 20 Seafire aircraft (the naval version of the Spitfire) for 899 Squadron to the Pacific Fleet, arriving in Sydney in May 1945. She was then assigned to Fleet Train (Task Forse 112) of the British Pacific Fleet, based at Manus, Admiralty Islands, transferring new aircraft to the fleet carriers and collecting unserviceable aircraft for repair. She was also involved in Operation Iceberg II, the attacks on the airfields in the Sakishima-Gunto group in late May, during which time he observed the kamikaze attacks on HMS Imdomitable, although they inflicted relatively minor damage due the British carrier's armoured flight deck.
By July 1945 he had transferred to HMS Indomitable, then undergoing a refit in Sydney, as Air Engineer Officer. She left Sydney on VJ Day (Aug 15) and travelled via Manus, Leyte and the Phillipines to join in the re-occupation of Hong Kong in Sep 1945.2,3,4

When HMS Indomitable was part of the force in Hong Kong in September 1945, he managed to find his relations (Eric William Sharp, Peggy Christine Sharp, Robert John Minnitt CMG and Annie (---?---)) amongst the Stanley Camp internees, and invited them aboard for a meal - Robert had no shoes at the time, and had to be given a Navy issue pair to wear.
Norman remained on the Indomitable for her return to Sydney in Oct/Nov 1945, then her voyage via Fremantle, Colombo and Aden before arriving back in the UK on 12 Dec 1945. He remained with her until being de-mobbed in Jul 1946.5,3

Norman died on 22 July 1999 in Harlow, Essex, at age 76.6 His ashes were buried at Torteval Cemetery in Torteval.
