John Smyth Forsaith was born in London, Middlesex, on 8 October 1804.2,1,3 and was baptised on 2 November 1804 at St Lukes Independent Tabernacle in Finsbury.2,3,4

He married Sarah Cade at St Lukes Old St in Finsbury, London, Middlesex, on 20 July 1828.1,5,6

He was widowed at age 28 on the death of his wife Sarah on 20 April 1833.1

John's second marriage was to Mary Ann Stokes on 10 September 1837 at St Mary, Haggerston in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex.1,7,8

In 1838 he started in business as a printer at 86 Church St, Bethnal Green with a wooden hand-press. Four years later he moved his plant to 329 Bethnal Green Rd (then a private house) and fitted out the basement as a printing shop. The presses then in use were manually powered by a balanced fly-wheel and winding handle, but by 1849 he was styling himself as a 'steam printer' - quite how he fitted a steam engine into the premises is unclear.9

He was listed in the 1841 census at Church St, Tower Hamlets in St Matthews Green, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was a printer. Their child John was listed with them.10

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at Bethnal Green in Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was a printer, employing four men. Their children John and William were listed as living with them, as was a servant, and one Sarah WHITE (annuitant).11

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at 118 Printer's St in Bethnal Green, London, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was a letter-press printer, employing five men and ten boys; an apprentice compositor was also living in the household. Their child John was listed as living with them.12

He was listed in the 1871 census as Head of Family at 2 Victoria Rd in Gravesend, Kent, with his wife Mary; he was a Master Printer; the household included Mary's niece Annie STOKES (a teacher), who was born in Jamaica.13

John died on 31 July 1883 at 28 Darnley Rd in Gravesend, Kent, at age 78.2,1,14,15 He was buried at the Gravesend Cemetery in Gravesend.2

His will was probated in London on 10 October 1883 with John Stokes Forsaith and William Valentine Forsaith appointed executors of a personal estate of £2875/11/4.15

He married Sarah Esther Roberts at St John of Jerusalem in Hackney, London, Middlesex, on 8 February 1866.1,9,10

He was listed in the 1871 census as Head of Family at 329 Bethnal Green Rd in Hackney, London, Middlesex, with his wife Sarah; he was a Master Printer, employing ten men and eight boys. Their children Sarah, John and Arthur were listed as living with them.11

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at 31 Southborough Rd in Hackney, London, Middlesex, with his wife Sarah; he was a Master printer, now employing eleven men and nine boys. Their children Sarah, John, Arthur and Emma were listed as living with them.4

John Stokes Forsaith and William Valentine Forsaith were appointed executors of John Smyth Forsaith's estate in London on 10 October 1883.12

After the death of his brother William in 1889, John then formed a partnership with his son John Benjamin under the name of J S Forsaith and Son.7

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 31 Southborough Rd in Hackney, London, Middlesex, with his wife Sarah; he was a Master printer. Their children Sarah, John, Arthur and Emma were listed as living with them.13

He qualified as Second Mate (11 Jan 1894), then as First Mate (26 Mar 1897), and received his Master's Certificate (#27794) on 4 February 1901.7
He was listed as the brother of Ellen Rowley Forsaith in the 1911 Census at 1 Dundonald Road in Broadstairs, Thanet, Kent, and was a mariner in the submarine telegraph industry.8

He was listed in the 1921 census as Head of Family at High St in Staplehurst, Kent; his sister Ellen Rowley Forsaith was at the same address. He was now retired from his job in the Merchant Marine for the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co.9

He was listed in the 1939 Register at 'Creagh', Shortheath Rd in Farnham, Surrey; he was a retired master mariner. Ellen Rowley Forsaith was listed as living at the same address.4

Joseph died on 20 June 1961 in Surrey at age 91.10,11

His will was probated in London on 24 August 1961 with effects valued at £4992/0/4.11

Josiah Forsaith was born in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, on 29 April 1822.2,1,3 and was baptised on 28 July 1822 at Artillery St Meeting House.2
He was listed as a member of Robert Forsaith's household in the 1841 census at 10 Curtain Rd, Tower Hamlets in St Leonards Shoreditch, Middlesex, working as a bank clerk.4

He married Mary Rooke in Islington, London, Middlesex, on 8 June 1847.1,5

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at 50 Bloomfield St Sth in West Hackney, London, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was a banker's clerk. Their children Josiah and Thomas were listed as living with them.6

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at 7 Albert Row in Hackney St John, London, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was a banker's clerk. Their children Josiah, Thomas, Mary and Annie were listed as living with them, as were two other clerks (as boarders) and a servant.7

He was listed in the 1871 census as Head of Family at 2 Cambray Terrace in Hackney St John, London, Middlesex, with his wife Mary; he was still a banker's clerk. Their children Josiah, Thomas and Frederick were listed as living with them.8

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at Whitford Rd, Lyndale in Croydon, Surrey; he remained a banker's clerk. His children Mary, Annie and Frederick were listed as living with him.3

Josiah died on 8 May 1883 at Maisonette, De Roos Rd, Upperton in Eastbourne, Sussex, at age 61 from chronic intestinal pnuemonia.2,1,9,10,11 He was buried on 12 May 1883 at the Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington.2,12

His will was probated in London on 12 June 1883 with Josiah Charles Forsaith and Thomas Edward Forsaith appointed executors of a personal estate of £1451/10/9.11
