Constance Evelyne Legay Hawkins1,2,3

(1862 - 1936)
Father*Willoughby Legay Hawkins3 b. c 1841, d. 1893
Mother*Fanny Wiggins3 b. 1834, d. 1916
Constance E L FERGUSSON (nee HAWKINS)(1862-1936)
Constance's birth was registered between April 1862 and June 1862 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire.3
She was listed in the 1881 census at 39 Charles St in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, in the household of her parents, Willoughby Legay Hawkins and Fanny Wiggins, along with her three brothers.4

She married Ernest Stuart Fergusson, son of John Fergusson and Jessie Muirhead McFarlane, at St Margaret's Church in Roath, Glamorganshire, on 1 October 1888. They left on a trip to London, Newcastle and other places after the wedding.5,6,7
She was listed in the 1891 census, boarding at 41 Havelock Rd in Hastings, Sussex.8
She was listed in the 1901 census at 39 Newport Rd in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, in the household of her mother Fanny Wiggins.9 Constance was separated from her husband, Ernest Stuart Fergusson at Cardiff, Glamorganshire, in May 1905. Constance applied for a separation order on the grounds of desertion, as she had not lived with her husband since shortly after she heard the news of the breach of promise action against him, which had occurred two days before the birth of a child. The court ordered maintenance of £2 per week and costs against Ernest.10

After the separation, she supported herself and the boys by letting rooms and writing fashion notes for the newspaper. In January 1904 she was at 172 Cathedral Road, later at no. 207, by August 1905 at no. 163 and later at no. 55.11

She was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at 18 Cathedral Rd in Cardiff, Glamorganshire; she was a boarding house keeper and the household included her mother Fanny Wiggins.12

During 1916, when she went to Guernsey to attend a wedding, she unmasked two German women spies in the next room who were masquerading as a Scots mother and daughter and were sending information about Allied shipping. She had heard a pinging noise in their room at night and found a wire hanging outside the window which she rightly guessed was connected to a wireless transmitter.13

She was listed in the 1921 census at 55 Cathedral Rd in Cardiff, Glamorganshire; the household contained two of her nieces (probably boarding with her) and a married couple who were boarding at this address. She claimed to be widowed, rather than just separated, and lowered her age by some 7 years.14

Constance died on 4 December 1936 at Ely Homes in Cardiff, Glamorganshire.15,16

Her will was probated in Llandaff, Glamorganshire, on 18 January 1937 with effects valued at £637.16
