Charles's marriage to Ethel Ada Clark, daughter of John Clark and Ethel Blanche Rust, was registered between July 1939 and September 1939 in Hackney, London, Middlesex.3,1

He was listed in the 1939 Register at 24 Ardleigh Rd in Hackney, London, Middlesex, along with John Clark and Ethel Blanche Rust; he was a Royal Artillery gunner.3
He served with the Royal Artillery (#907973) as a gunner, but spent much of the war as a prisoner (#7183) at Stalag XVIII-A, Wolfsburg.5
