Charles Edward Chandler was born in Holborn, London, Middlesex, on 9 June 1917. He was the son of Thomas and Sophia Chandler.^3,2,4 He was baptised at St Pauls in Islington, Clerkenwell St Peter, Middlesex, on 1 July 1917.²

Charles's marriage to Ethel Ada Clark, daughter of John Clark and Ethel Blanche Rust, was registered between July 1939 and September 1939 in Hackney, London, Middlesex.^3,1

He was listed in the 1939 Register at 24 Ardleigh Rd in Hackney, London, Middlesex, along with John Clark and Ethel Blanche Rust; he was a Royal Artillery gunner.³
He served with the Royal Artillery (#907973) as a gunner, but spent much of the war as a prisoner (#7183) at Stalag XVIII-A, Wolfsburg.⁵

He married Alice Frances Lettman, daughter of William Henry Lettman and Elizabeth Emily Robinson, in Queensland on 29 June 1908.^1,2

He was widowed on the death of his wife Alice on 20 February 1915.³
