Stanley Richard Hailstone Gifford Burgess1,2

(1889 - 1935)
Stanley Richard Hailstone Gifford Burgess was born in Camberwell, London, Middlesex, on 26 March 1889. An 1888 date is given in his Army enlistment records, but given his age wanders somewhat in these records, it seems more likely to be 1889 (as per his UK birth registration). However, on his marriage, he claimed he was born in Dublin and was aged 42 - this seems a fabrication, given the census returns also indicate an 1889 London birth. He was the son of Arthur BURGESS and Louisa Catherine SMITH.2,3,1

He appears in the NZ Electoral Rolls for 1911 as a farm hand in the Oroua district of Wanganui. This fits with his subsequent military enlistment, where he states he was a shepherd on the property of a Mrs FERGUSON at Patutahi, Gisborne.4

He enlisted in the NZ Army, 9th Regmt, Wellington Infantry Battalion (#10/1111) on 20 August 1914 at Gisborne, Hawkes Bay.3
He served in the Gallipoli campaign, having been shipped from Alexandria on the Dunluce Castle on 12 April 1915, but was transferred to hospital on Mudros on the 25 June, then back to Alexandria base and on to a Greek hospital in July before returning to England in Jan 1916.3 He was discharged on 8 December 1916 at Codford His personnel file shows he had suffered from enteric fever and bronchitis (due to 'climatic conditions, Gallipoli') and a bomb explosion had left him with wounds in his right leg (described as 'slight') and fallen arches in both feet.3

He married Jean Macgregor Fergusson, daughter of Alexander Macgregor Fergusson and Elizabeth Hulton, at the Registrar's Office in Sydney, New South Wales, on 12 August 1929. Both of them were living in Pott's Point at the time, and he claimed to be a taxi driver - she gave no occupation. However, in the 1930 Electoral Rolls, he gives an occupation of 'planter'.1

He and his wife Jean arrived in Auckland from Sydney on the Ulimaroa on 14 October 1930 but there is no mention of her children on the manifest. Both are classified under a heading of 'labourers and domestic.5'

He and his wife Jean arrived in Southampton on 11 July 1931 on the Corinthic, having left Auckland on 2 Jun 1931 (under the name of Giffard-Burgess) accompanied by their children Richard and Peter.6,7

Stanley's death was registered between October 1935 and December 1935 in Reading, Berkshire.8
