He enlisted in the Army after being called up on 12 July 1918 and was posted to a Training Battalion (Bedfordshire Regt), before being transferred to the RAMC on 19 Jul 1919. He served as a Private (#169128) with the 36th CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) at Cologne before being demobbed on the 29 Apr 1920. At enlistment his address was 21 Oxford Rd, Ponders End, London and he was employed as an embosser's assistant.5
He was listed in the 1921 census with Albert Victor Playford and Hilda Mary Wicks at 21 Oxford Rd in Enfield, Middlesex, (as was his mother) and he was an unemployed labourer.6

He married Annette Winifred Frances Clements at St Matthews Church in Ponders End, Enfield, Middlesex, on 25 December 1928. He was a labourer, she was a clerk and she took 7 years off her age on the marriage certificate.7,8

He was listed in the 1939 Register at 4 Berkely Ave in Chestnut, Hertfordshire, with Annette Winifred Frances Clements; he was a cordite worker and ARP warden.2

William died on 9 March 1961 at The Herts and Essex General Hospital in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, at age 60.9,10

His will was probated in London, Middlesex, on 9 June 1961 with his estate valued at £1700/16/-.9

William Poulter Wicks

William Poulter Wicks was born in Queenborough, Kent, on 10 July 1807.2 He was baptised at Holy Trinity in Queenborough, Kent, on 18 October 1807.1,2

He married Esther Barton, daughter of George Barton and Ann Oxled, in Hedsor, Buckinghamshire, on 9 March 1835.3

He served with the Royal Navy but records for him are scant; they do show him as a Gunner (12 Apr 1839), Gunner 3rd class on Excellent and Cambrian (1841), advancing to 1st class by Jan 1848 on the Ganges, but apparently hospitalised 15 Oct 1849. His burial records state he was a Warrant Officer (1859).4,5

He was widowed on the death of his wife Esther between April 1846 and June 1846.6

William's second marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Buckingham, daughter of Richard Buckingham and Patience Higgs, on 10 August 1847 in Lewisham, Kent.7,8,9

William died on 24 November 1859 at Victoria St, Landport in Portsea, Hampshire, at age 52.10,11 He was buried on 29 November 1859 at the Kingston Cemetery in Portsmouth.12

His will was probated in Winchester on 22 February 1860 with Sarah Elizabeth Buckingham appointed administrator for his personal estate and effects, being under £200.11

Fanny Wiggins was born at Clifton in Bristol, Gloucestershire, in 1834.2 and was baptised on 30 March 1834 in Clifton.3
She was listed in the 1841 census at the Bath Buildings in Bristol, Gloucestershire, where she appeared to be living with a Read family.4
She was listed in the 1851 census at 5 Eldon Place in Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire, with her dressmaker mother Fanny (widowed) and sister Emily. She was working as a milliner.2

Fanny's marriage to Willoughby Legay Hawkins was registered between April 1860 and June 1860 in Clifton, Gloucestershire.5

She was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at Romnilly Cres in Llandaff, Glamorganshire; he was an accountant in a merchant's office and the household included their newborn son Willoughby R A HAWKINS.6

She was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at 39 Charles St in Cardiff, Glamorganshire; he was secretary to the Chamber of Commerce., as were their three sons (Willoughby, Ralph, William) and a servant. Note that he is listed as 'William N HAWKINS' - presumably a census-taker's error.7

Fanny, as the mother of the bride, attended Constance Evelyne Legay Hawkins and Ernest Stuart Fergusson's wedding at St Margaret's Church in Roath, Glamorganshire, on 1 October 1888.8,9,10

She was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 17 Partridge Rd in Roath, Cardiff, Glamorganshire; her son Willoughby and a servant were also present.11

She was widowed on the death of her husband Willoughby on 5 January 1893.12,13

She was appointed executrix of Willoughby Legay Hawkins's estate in Llandaff, Glamorganshire, on 6 May 1893.13
