Richard Robert WICKS1

(1855 - 1933)
Father*William Poulter WICKS2 b. 1807, d. 1859
Mother*Sarah Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM2 b. c 1822, d. 1893
Richard Robert WICKS (1855-1933)
He was baptised at St Marys in Portsea, Hampshire, on 15 April 1855.3
The siblings Arthur, Richard and Ernest were listed in the 1861 census at 9 Victoria St in Portsea, Hampshire, with their mother Sarah Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM.4
The siblings Richard and Ernest were listed in the 1871 census at 9 Victoria St in Portsea, Hampshire, with their mother Sarah Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM. Richard was an errand boy.5

Richard's marriage to Emily DUNN was registered between October 1879 and December 1879 in Portsea, Hampshire.6,7

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at Wycombe Rd in Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; they were both upholsterers with a sideline as dealers in china. Their child Harold was listed as living with them.8

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family in Wooburn Green, Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was still an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy and William were listed as living with them, as was his widowed mother Sarah.9

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at Bourne Rd in Bourne End, Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was still working as an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy, William, Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.6

He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at The Parade in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was now a stationer and she was assisting in the business. The census form was filled in by Emily, as she noted her husband had been blind since he was 51. Their children Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.1

It is interesting to compare Richard's stated occupation in the census records with his shop-front in the 1920s. Both he and Emily claimed to be upholsterers in 1881 (with a sideline in china). The shop picture from the '20s clearly states 'Stationer' (matching the 1911 census) but there are several signs advertising Lipton's Tea and a curious extra cabinet to the right of the shop displaying chinaware.

Richard died on 27 September 1933 in Windsor, Berkshire, at age 78.10,11

His will was probated in London, Middlesex, on 23 October 1933 with Dorothy Mabel WICKS appointed executor with his estate valued at £269/12/5.11

(1851 - 1915)
Father*William Poulter WICKS1 b. 1807, d. 1859
Mother*Sarah Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM1 b. c 1822, d. 1893
Sidney Buckingham WICKS (or George WESTON)(1851-1915)
Sidney Buckingham WICKS was born in Landport, Hampshire, on 1 April 1851.2,3,1 and was baptised on 4 September 1853 at St Marys in Portsea.4

After the death of his father in December 1859 his mother appears to have arranged for him to stay with his aunt and uncle, possibly for the whole period until his enlistment in the Royal Navy. This may be one of the reasons he later adopted the WESTON name.
He was listed as the nephew of Purton WESTON in the 1861 Census at 20 Queen Sq in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.2

He enlisted in the Royal Navy, as Boy 2nd class (height 4' 9", hair dark, eyes blue) on 8 November 1865 at Portsmouth, Hampshire. He volunteered for service on the 8 Nov 1865 at HMS Excellent (a stone frigate), but did not commence his ten year continuous service engagement until 1 April 1869.5

Sidney Buckingham WICKS was also known as George WESTON although there is much confusion surrounding the use of these two names and how or why Sidney became George. We have recorded here the known registration of the birth of the children (as 'WICKS') but all of them attended school as 'WESTON' and all except two also lived and married as 'WESTON'. There is also no record of a Sidney WICK's life in New Zealand, plus all the evidence suggests he lived as a WESTON in the Te Puke area as a general contractor and carrier and was buried as George WESTON, along with his wife Harriet.6

The 'Auckland Star' of July-Aug 1870 records the remand (from Tauranga to Auckland) of one George Weston, pleading guilty to being a deserter from HMS Rosario, and subsequently being remanded further until one of Her Majesty's ships appeared. Due to the continued lack of such a ship he was further remanded on the 29th of Jul and 5th of Aug, then on the 19th Aug, havong spent 5 weeks in custody, was discharged.
It is unclear if this is the 'real' George Weston (who was a contemporary RN seaman), or Sidney Wicks claiming to be George Weston.7

He married Harriet TIPPETT in Waiuku on 16 June 1881.8

Sidney described himself as 'pilot boatman' on his son's birth certificate in 1885.9

Sidney died on 13 November 1915 in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, at age 64.10,6 He was buried at the Te Puke Old Cemetery in Te Puke.10
